Rooted for Real Life

For the seasons that shape us, stretch us, and teach us how to live.

Rest & Discernment

Rest is not an afterthought, and discernment is more than choosing between good and bad.

Many of us know how to keep going long after our attention, bodies, and interior lives have begun asking us to stop. Rest can then feel irresponsible, while every request begins to sound urgent.

But discernment is not simply deciding between good and bad. Often the harder choice is between several good things that cannot all receive the same amount of time, energy, and attention.

Christian discernment requires enough interior quiet to ask not only, “Is this good?” but also, “Is this mine? Is this for now? What is being asked of me in this season?”

Rest helps us hear those questions more clearly. It reminds us that we are creatures, not machines, and that our worth does not depend on uninterrupted usefulness.

Not every need is an assignment, and not every opportunity deserves a yes.

Questions to sit with

  • What currently receives my energy simply because it is loud?
  • Which good commitments belong to this season, and which may need to wait?
  • Where am I treating exhaustion as evidence of faithfulness?
  • What becomes clearer when I stop long enough to pray before answering?

Before adding one new commitment this week, wait. Give yourself enough space to ask: Is this good? Is it mine? Is it for now? A delayed yes can sometimes be wiser than an immediate one.
